Neighborhood Missions Team

Holy Trinity is blessed to be at the center of downtown Lancaster, with neighbors from many and varied cultures, in a wide range of economic circumstances. Around us are restaurants, businesses, non-profit agencies, and government offices. We meet to get to know our neighbors and neighborhoods, and to listen to their stories and see their giftedness to our community.

As part of our ministry the Neighborhood Missions Team sponsors a local community garden, The Garden of Dreams, located off of Duke St. in front of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary.  The produce grown in the garden is available for free to the local community. Produce includes peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, strawberries, and squash.

We also have a growing partnership with MLK, Jr. Elementary School.  They have two beds on their own property that students and teachers tend to through the growing season and are used for their ecology club.  We help get these beds ready for the season by prepping the soil and helping find donations from the local community.  We also have been working with the school to improve the outside aesthetics including planting a tree from the Lancaster Shade Tree Commission and a planned planting by their school sign.

We thank Ken’s Gardens (http://kensgardens.com/) for donating plants, soil, and supplies every year; the Lancaster Shade Tree Commission (http://cityoflancasterpa.com/government/shade-tree-commission); and Tudbinks for donating supplies for the school beds.

Opportunities to Help

Planting – We do two plantings a year: one in March/April of cold crops and one big one in May.

Tending and Watering – We tend to the garden by weeding, marking what produce is ready for harvesting, and watering on a weekly basis on Thursday mornings as a group.  You can also come down and work at a time that is convenient for you.

Cleaning – In October we prep the garden for the winter months by cleaning out the beds.

Join the Leadership Team – We meet approximately once a month on the fourth Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the church library.  We make plans for the garden and meet with leaders at the school to further this ministry and support the school.
